Visiting the Shri Venkateswara Temple
As part of their Humanities curriculum, Year 4 visited the Shri Venkateswara Temple in Birmingham, one of the largest Hindu temples in Europe. The group were invited by Bertie A’s grandparents to spend a morning at the temple where Bertie’s grandfather is a ‘Faith Leader’ and Trustee. It was wonderful to be able to spend time observing Hindus praying and making offerings to the gods (Murti) at the many different shrines.
The children learnt how Hindus practise their religion by doing good things (this is called Dharma). We also watched Hindu priests performing prayers and rituals. We were even invited to join in and many of us had a Shadari Crown placed on our head while the priest said a blessing. We then had to walk in a clockwise direction around the shrine. Ram (Bertie’s grandfather) told us lots of interesting stories and was very patient when answering our many questions!
We all agreed that we had learnt so much and it was a day that we will never forget!
