Reading and World Book Day

With the excitement of World Book Day underway, we have enjoyed a mixture of exciting activities taking place with our houses and all had great fun wearing a costume to represent the four themes shared across the whole school, with this year’s theme focusing on inviting everyone to ‘Read Your Way’.

We welcomed Andy Leach from Hector's Post to our assembly this morning and listened with wonder as he talked about how he chose to become an author and where he finds the inspiration for writing his beautiful books which we have enjoyed reading in class.  Research shows that children feel reading is something they have to do, rather than something they choose to do. Beyond learning to recognise whole words and sound out new and unknown words, children naturally love listening to stories, holding a book, turning the pages and looking at the pictures with a grown up. One of the things we work hard to foster in the early years at Moulsford is the idea that reading is for everyone, with children in the Bobcats and Wildcats taking home books that they can share with a grown up, talking about the pictures and characters and guessing what they think might happen next.

Reading in the early years is crucial for children's development. It enhances their general knowledge, language skills, and attention spans, which are essential for later schooling. Early reading also fosters a love for literacy, making it a fun part of their learning experience. Engaging children in reading from a young age can lead to improved vocabulary and fluency, setting a strong foundation for their future education. Above all, reading can be a great bonding experience for every child and family member, providing a lovely opportunity to snuggle up, chat and wind down after a busy day at school! Well done to everyone who took part today and happy reading this weekend, and every day thereafter!

Celebration assembly to include Stars of the Week and the Kindness, Courage and Curiosity badge will take place on Monday of next week due to our special World Book Day assembly this morning.
