Interesting Insight into World War 2
The Year 4 trip to Swindon's 'STEAM' Museum was incredibly exciting for us all. The boys had a whole host of interesting workshops during their visit. They focused on the role of the railway during World War 2 looking at its uses for evacuating children, goods and transporting goods for the army. All dressed up as evacuees, the boys were lined up and evacuated at the museum's railway platform.
They also took part in a series of activities looking at how the role of women had changed during the war. They learnt about all the jobs women were expected to take on when the men left to go to war and how this has shaped the working world today. The boys enjoyed walking around the museum and rummaging through evacuees’ suitcases and discovering what items the children were likely to take with them on their journey away from home.
Finally, when the boys arrived in 'the countryside', they were billeted and some were lucky enough to be picked by a dashing station guard, a rather rugged farmer and his wife, an honourable policeman and a delightful lady who owned a flower shop!
The boys all represented Moulsford extremely well and learnt a great deal.
