Head's Blog: Ergos and Pontoons

Next Friday, all Moulsford boys from Years 3-8 will be taking part in the 5th Inter-House Triathlon. For many boys, this super annual event is their first introduction to this discipline, and possibly one of their first opportunities to use a rowing machine.

However, thanks to the Parents’ Association, rowing will no longer be a novelty to Moulsford boys and we may see triathlon records broken both on Friday and in years to come. The PA has very kindly purchased eight rowing machines (ergos) which have been installed in the building known as the ‘boatshed’ situated in the Pre-Prep playground. The room is equipped with a screen which will link to all the ergos so that boys can see how they are performing both relative to each other and against the clock. Thank you to Mark Earnshaw, Head of Rowing at Abingdon, who gave training to the staff on the ergos this week.

Last Thursday, the PA also approved in principle a contribution to a new floating pontoon, which will enable a much speedier launch of boats on to the river. There is always time pressure on the activities slot, and the more time boys can spend on the water, the more they will get out of kayaking/canoeing/sailing/paddle boarding. A new pontoon will need planning permission and so would not be in operation until Spring 2020. The school is also currently exploring the possibility of rowing for the older boys. Both the ergos and the pontoon are wonderful examples of the school and parents working together for the benefit of the boys.
