On Tuesday, I gave an assembly to the boys (Years 3-8) about the importance of community. We discussed the different groups that make up the Moulsford community, starting with the immediate: staff, boys, parents, governors and of course all our canine friends, the Moulsford dogs. We then recognised that the Moulsford community stretched beyond the school grounds to such groups as the residents of Moulsford village, and local charities we support e.g. Rivertime Boat Trust and Hearing Dogs for the Deaf. Beyond this, boys saw the importance of the wider community of Old Moles, past staff and parents and international charities such as SKRUM, Mary’s Meals and Inspire.
To illustrate the benefits of working as a community, I used the example of the Moulsford Parents Association (MPA). The MPA has three main aims, which are: first, to welcome new parents to the school; second, to host and organise community events; and third to raise funds for the benefit of the community and specifically the boys. To demonstrate how our community is joined up, we discussed how some of the ideas of the School Council (made up of boys) are fed back to the MPA so that they can be considered as spend requests.
Learning to be part of a community is integral to a Moulsford education, but it is only one aspect of it. The five key areas which the staff (both academic and support) see as the essence of the Moulsford experience are: community, opportunity, support, a rounded approach, and happiness. I will be covering the latter four in forthcoming assemblies.
