Women in Sport

6Sm delivered a fantastic assembly to their parents and the rest of the school all about female sporting role models. They started with a quiz where the pupils were asked to identify the faces on screen with Nathan K correctly guessing US footballer Megan Rapino and parent Mrs Humphreys guessing Dame Katherine Grainger. The class then told us the story of Kathrine Switzer who made history in 1967 by becoming the first woman to run a marathon. They then moved on to talk about current sporting role models with footballer Sam Kerr, rugby player Ilona Maher, cricketer (and former Bradfield pupil) Lauren Bell and runner Keeley Hodgkinson all featuring, along with some sporting stars of the future from the worlds of Formula 1 and athletics.

The assembly concluded with a look at the Moulsford Hall of Fame and the sporting heroes that we have on the staff…

  • Under 17 South East hockey winner – Miss Dutton
  • England rowing cox – Mrs McMann
  • National League hockey player – Miss Browne
  • Played Lacrosse for Wales – Mrs Hamilton-Smith
  • Qualified table tennis coach – Mrs Squire
  • Medallist at National Water Polo Championships – Mrs Scriven
  • Ultra Marathon Runner – Mrs Manning
  • Cycled 500 miles around Dartmoor for charity – Mrs Hibbert
  • Ice water swimmers – Mrs Symonds, Mrs Thackray, Mme Lancaster and Mrs Manning

It was an inspiring assembly and really highlighted the amazing female role models currently playing sport, globally and indeed closer to home!
