Head's Blog: Confidence is key

Head's Blog

If national and international events have taught us anything over the past few months, it is that “we live in an uncertain world”. The other phrase that springs to mind at present is “a week is a long time in politics”, attributed to Harold Wilson, and probably first said by him at a lobby briefing for journalists during.... the sterling crisis in 1964.

Learning to cope with change, uncertainty and adversity and being able to react with a clear head to events, are skills which are learnt and developed over a period of time. Developing confidence is central to this, and we aim to instil and grow self-belief in boys at Moulsford from an early age. This is achieved in so many different ways, one of which is giving boys opportunities which may push them out of their comfort zone.

At our recent Open Days, the Year 7 and 8 boys were outstanding not only at guiding prospective parents around the school, but more importantly in engaging with them in a genuine, meaningful and purposeful way. What is particularly pleasing to observe is that the boys are incredibly keen to take on these guiding roles, and the passion they have for their school is plain to see.

Other opportunities to develop self-confidence can be found in form assemblies, plays, music showcases (see above photo from today), concerts or indeed in the production of the video material which informs the wider world about the Moulsford experience. You may enjoy watching our new four-minute video of some boys ‘in conversation’ with Jim Hamilton-Smith, Deputy Head Pastoral, which was filmed last term, and has just come through the final editing process. It’s great to listen to the boys talking through all they do at school… with confidence.
