On Wednesday we had our first full set of fixtures, with all boys in Years 5 to 8 representing the school against Summer Fields on the football pitches. It was so good to put out so many teams, with boys in Years 7 and 8 playing for the 1st to the 9th XIs. As you can imagine, the fixtures were fiercely contested, and there were some cracking games. There were many contenders for Match of the Day, but a highlight was the 5-5 draw contested between the 3rd XIs, with Summer Fields scoring an equaliser in the final minute. Those who both played or watched this match will surely remember the drama for years to come.
In Thursday’s assembly, the first Lionheart awards of the year were presented. This highly sought after accolade is given to boys across the age groups who have demonstrated TEETH in recent fixtures. That is:
T-eamwork
E-ndeavour
E-njoyment
T-ough (Resilience)
H-umility
Lionhearts can be earnt by any boy in any team, and the first awards of the year went to Luke F (4th XI), Seth C (U11F), and Will B (U10A). We teach the boys to play sport in a competitive environment, but above all we aim to develop passions for life, collaboration and sportsmanship.
This week’s assemblies have continued to focus on the Queen, specifically on the period of national mourning, as well as the mechanics of the transfer of ‘power’ from the Queen to the King. The latter has been fascinating for both the boys and all of us to observe. Underlying the fanfare and pageantry is a constitutional democracy which appears to be working, and it’s easy to see how either a vacuum or worse could be caused by the loss of both the country’s leaders in quick succession. One clip which we all watched was the first meeting between our new King and the Prime Minister, the day after the Queen died. It was extraordinary to have a glimpse into Buckingham Palace, and witness the very human side of both leaders.
I am sure many of us will be watching the Queen’s funeral on Monday. We look forward to seeing you and your boys on Tuesday.
