Head's Blog: Nativity Memories

Head's Blog

The final full week of the Autumn term is always an extremely special time at Moulsford. The Nativity and Christmas plays, Christmas concerts and Carol Service are such wonderful opportunities for the boys to gain confidence in performing and for many of us in the community to celebrate Christmas together. Last year, these events were recorded and we are delighted that next week we are able to hold live performances with all boys involved, apart from those who are regrettably unwell. We understand the great importance of these milestone productions for boys, parents and staff.

I still have very clear memories of a Nativity that I ‘starred’ in at St. Teresa’s Primary School in Wokingham in 1975. As the Inn Keeper I had a small but important role, which I took very seriously and prepared assiduously for. However, on the day of the production, for reasons still unclear to me, I decided to depart from the script. When Mary and Joseph knocked on my tavern door to ask if there was any room at the Inn, I replied that we had plenty and that they were very welcome to take a room. As you might imagine, this slightly threw the expectant parents and we all had a crash course in improvisation with them thanking me for the offer, but with Mary deciding that actually she’d much rather give birth in a stable. My Nativity production which played out in front of a slightly bemused audience and an understandably cross Director, lives long in the memory, and I’m sure this will be the case for children and parents all over the world.

The current Covid situation at school has resulted in a number of adjustments to the end of term programme and please could I encourage parents to read through the details in the Week Ahead. If rising cases necessitate further changes to the programme, we will let you know.  Thank you for your understanding and support in this unusual period and we look forward to seeing many of you at school next week.
