Budding Journalists in action
Last half term Mr Brown ran a Community News activity for a group of Year 7 and 8 boys every week, with the aim of producing a newsletter by the end of the half term. The first thing the group did was generate ideas and it soon became pretty clear from a community service angle that they needed to share some information about the Moulsford Awards, how they have developed this year, the breadth of activities available to pupils and some of the pupils' responses.
They then decided which groups they wanted to visit and each of the budding reporters came up with a series of questions to ask. Over the next few weeks they spoke with pupils from a variety of groups, taking notes on iPads and then for the last couple of weeks they worked with Mr Brown on the copy, starting with headline, subheading, then the opening paragraphs and finally adding each boy's contribution with lots of direct and reported speech. The boys all did a great job and the end product is a well-written, informative news feature.
