How the Victorians changed the way we live.
This morning 4C gave us an insight into how our lives have changed because of the bravery, imagination and intelligence of the Victorian people. We discovered how antiseptic has paved the way for sterilization; Elizabeth Garrett Anderson fought for women’s medical education; Florence Nightingale became the first ‘celebrity’ due to her work in Crimea, and Jenner’s ingenuity caused smallpox to die out.
We felt our mouths watering when finding out that Fry, Vaughan and Co. invented the first Easter eggs; Cadbury’s business boomed as taxes on cocoa were cut making chocolate affordable to all, and that Jacob Fussell invented the delights of ice cream… how difficult our childhoods would be without all these great treats! Not to mention that we would still be down the mines or up the chimneys without Queen Victoria’s desire to improve the lives of children.
Our parents were shocked to find out they wouldn’t have their smart phones or be able to take photographs; and we are all very grateful for the flushing toilet…
4C were mightily impressive in the learning of so much information; their confidence and vocal projection on stage, and of course their wonderful outfits! Thank you to all their parents for helping organise these and working so hard at home with them on their lines. We have a budding group of actors here! And they should be delighted with their performances. Well done 4C!
