Head's Blog: Wellbeing at Moulsford

Head's Blog

Friday marks the end of Children’s Mental Health Week. We discussed this in Tuesday’s assembly and form tutors have been talking with boys about the importance of looking after both our individual and collective wellbeing. The week may be over but Moulsford is committed to this cause and has very recently signed up to gaining a Wellbeing accreditation. Developed in partnership with the National Children’s Bureau (NCB), the Wellbeing Award for Schools is intended to help schools prepare and equip themselves to promote emotional wellbeing and positive mental health across the whole-school community. NCB’s vision is an education system where good emotional wellbeing and mental health are at the heart of the culture and ethos of all schools, so that pupils, with the support of their teachers, can build confidence and flourish.

Evidence shows us that wellbeing is of central importance to learning and attainment, with high levels of wellbeing associated with improved academic outcomes. Conversely, pupils who have mental health problems are more likely to have academic difficulties at school and experience social disadvantage later in adult life. Moulsford works best when there is close partnership between parents and the school, and shortly parents will be able to contribute to the process by completing a questionnaire regarding wellbeing at Moulsford. Connected with this, the mental health charity Place2Be was presented with a cheque for £100,000 raised through the Heads’ Up Challenge in which I took part at the end of August. Thank you for all your support with this.

We had a very successful Open Day today with thirty-eight families visiting the school. The Year 7 and 8 boys were excellent guides and we are also very grateful to a number of current parents who gave up their time to help with the event.
