8M run a strong and positive election campaign

Thursday 8th June was a day of huge significance, not only for the British people as a whole, but also for our own Moulsford community! Following weeks of committed campaigning from our five Moulsford political parties, it was decision day for the school, as every boy from Year 3 to 8 (and all the staff) had the opportunity to go to the Moulsford polls.

Following the announcement by Theresa May to hold a snap election, so the concept of the Moulsford election was born. The boys from 8M were put into political parties at random, and spent a great deal of time researching and familiarising themselves with the parties’ key policies and views. They then created manifestos, posters, fliers, and filmed party political broadcasts, all with the aim of convincing the Moulsford boys to support their party on election-day.

Opinion polls were conducted before half term and Oscar BN was instrumental in creating an incredible computer programme that enabled all boys to take part in the opinion polls.

During election week, campaigning became more intense, taking place during form time and, most entertainingly, on soap-boxes with the use of a megaphone during ‘drink and biscuit’.

On election-day itself, the candidates showed their party political broadcasts to the school during assembly and then took questions from the electorate in a hugely enjoyable ‘Question Time’ style debate.

And so the school voted. The sports-hall balcony was converted into a polling station, voters turned up at allotted times throughout the day armed with their polling cards, and votes were cast and put into the ballot box. Oscar’s computer programme was again used to conduct random exit polls, which were shared with the whole school at various points during the day. These suggested the Moulsford Conservatives were in a strong position.

Votes were then meticulously counted, before an announcement of the results was filmed. And the results……

Moulsford Conservatives – 110

Moulsford UKIP - 77

Moulsford Liberal Democrats - 63

Moulsford Green - 60

Moulsford Labour – 24

Please see the attachment for a clearer picture of the final votes.

Huge congratulations must go to all of the 8M boys who have worked so hard on this project. It has been great fun and hopefully a positive introduction to British politics for all of the boys at Moulsford.
