Snapping nature for charity

Ben P-P in Year 6 recently organised a photography competition as part of the Genius Hour project. Boys, staff and parents were invited to submit a photograph of nature in exchange for a donation to the World Wildlife Fund. There were some fantastic entries and Ben raised just over £400.

Professional photographer Chris Baines kindly agreed to judge the entries and was very impressed with the high standard of the photos. He said that he had such a difficult time selecting the winners that he also created a ‘Special Mention’ category for each group, as there were so many impressive pictures!

However, congratulations go to…..

Years 3 to 5

Winner: Duck by Jude H in Year 4

Chris said this was a strong image with beautiful colours. The duck’s orange beak is perfectly positioned against the light blue water and the angled camera brings the photograph alive.

Special Mention: Boy watching duck and ducklings by Henry F in Year 3

Chris said this was an imaginative composition with the boy’s head so high up on the left and the ducks camouflaged amongst the logs in the water. It makes you look carefully and tells an intriguing story!

Years 6 to 8

Winner: Daffodil and ladybird by Archie D-P in Year 7

Chris said this was a vivid, bold composition with the flower carefully positioned to the left, leaving space for the soft green background on the right. The ladybird is facing perfectly into the centre of the photo.

Special Mention: Robin by Bertie W in Year 7

Chris said this was a striking image of a robin with its wings beautifully extended for flight, clearly set against a light sky.

Parents and Staff

Winner: Sycamore seed by Valentine Ward

Chris said this was a beautiful and unusual close-up. All the colours in the image complement each other so well, and the pin-sharp veins of the decaying sycamore seed contrast wonderfully with the out of focus background.

Special Mention: Murmuration of starlings by Katherine Verrill

Chris said the shapes of the starlings and the delicate colours of evening are skilfully captured in this lovely, atmospheric image. Some of the birds are sharp while others are blurred, creating a great sense of movement.

Many congratulations to everyone who took part and, again, to Ben for coming up with the idea and making it all happen!
