One of the great Moulsford institutions is the School Council. This takes the form of an Upper (Years 3 – 8) and a Lower Chamber (Reception – Year 2). These two chambers have their own distinct meetings and then come together at certain points in the term to present their overall recommendations.
On Thursday, the Lower Chamber met with Mr. Hamilton-Smith and Mrs. Hartley. At the top of their agenda for improvements to the school were large tractors for the outdoor playground. The boys would also like an external speaker to visit the Pre-Prep to talk about tractors (applications welcomed). A greater variety of dinosaur games were requested as well as a bouncy castle, dogs and snakes. The Lower Chamber was understanding when it was explained that some pets may not be suitable in the playground. Feedback from the Lower Chamber suggests that boys are satisfied with the regularity of train viewing opportunities afforded by a Moulsford education.
These first stages of involvement in the democratic process and gaining an idea of how institutions work are very important for boys’ overall development. As they progress through school and their careers, the issues children face will become more complex. However, it is hoped that if the fundamental lessons of how to put a case forward and reach a consensus are ingrained at an early stage, the boys will have learnt a very valuable life skill. Our current crop of parliamentary leaders could glean a great deal by observing the Moulsford Lower Chamber at work.
On a separate note, many congratulations to Arion T who has been awarded a Music Exhibition to Bradfield College.
