Brass, Woodwind and Percussion Day at Radley College
Eighteen boys travelled to Radley College on Monday for a Prep Schools’ Brass, Woodwind and Percussion day. Welcomed and hosted by the Head of Brass and Woodwind, Simon Carr, the boys were taught by instrument specialists from the Radley music department in separate groups. Interspersed with plenty of food and drink stops - the home-made cookies were a particular highlight – the boys enjoyed a day purely focussed on music-making and learning from others.
Parents were invited for tea and a very impressive concert at the end of the day. Individual instrument ensembles were followed by a final concert band performance, which included an excerpt from Handel’s Royal Fireworks Music, and The Simpsons theme tune! In his welcome speech, Mr Carr talked of the huge benefits that come with learning a musical instrument, in particular the multi-tasking and organisational skills gained as well as the pure enjoyment and de-stress from academic focus that music can bring. He urged parents and boys to keep going with music lessons through senior school to make the most of these benefits.
