Supporting those with a stammer
On Monday, Moulsford held its own Stammering Awareness Day (as the national day is always in the Autumn half term). The boys were all either given an assembly or afternoon presentation about what a stammer is and most importantly what we can do as a Moulsford Community to support and help people we meet, who have a stammer. These tips include letting the person finish their own sentences and listening with eye-contact and a big smile. The boys came up with some really interesting questions and thoughtful comments. By the end of the day, they were all able to dismiss any myths they had heard and had a better understanding of why people stammer. Around the school we had images of people who stammer including: Charles Darwin, Alan Turing and Tiger Woods.
If any parents have any concerns about stammering please contact the Learning Support Department. There is also some great advice on the Michael Palin Centre website: https://michaelpalincentreforstammering.org/about-stammering/parents/
The boys have all watched this clip made to explain how it feels to stammer and how to help. My Stammering Tap - it is well worth a watch if you have a spare 3 minutes! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IGN0BB0HaCo
