Head's Blog: Boarding at Moulsford

Head's Blog Boarding

One very important aspect of a Moulsford education is the school’s Boarding House. While boarding may not be on the radar for many parents when their sons join the school in the early years, it can play a really valuable role for boys and their families as they progress through the Prep school.  Boarding at Moulsford also opens up the opportunity for building friendships, developing skills and fostering independence in a homely, safe and nurturing environment.

It is worth noting that virtually all Moulsford boarders live in close proximity to the school, and that Moulsford boys board out of choice, mainly in preparation for the transition to senior boarding schools, but not exclusively. A number of boys also board simply because of the experience and fun which the boarding community offers, even if they themselves will be moving on to a day school. We currently have 50 boarders at Moulsford, 24 of whom are in Year 8, of whom 5 will be starting at senior day schools in September.

Moulsford Year 8 boys depart to about 14 different senior schools on average every year. This diversity of choice which parents and boys have is often fuelled by boys’ boarding experience at Moulsford.  It is rare that a boy goes to a boarding school having not boarded at all at Moulsford.

While the Boarding House is a relatively niche aspect of school life, it has a significant impact on the school’s environment and culture, and all Moulsford boys are beneficiaries of this. Through boarding, the Moulsford staff become involved in many different areas of school life beyond the normal school day, and extremely strong pastoral care is at the core of a successful boarding house, which in turn permeates through the school.

We offer boarding from Year 5 onwards, and while the majority of boarders are in Years 6, 7 and 8, we hold a number of events through the year for younger boarders to trial sleeping over at Moulsford. We have a Year 5 Trial Boarding night on Friday 11th June, and all of Year 4 will have the opportunity to stay overnight during Activities Week (w/b 28th June). Boarding places for September are filling up: for further details please contact Jaimie Noble at [email protected] and/or do watch the boarding video, which also features on the school website.
