Leo wins Top Rookie at Super One Cadet Championship

Leo R, in Year 4, drives for Fusion Motorsport in the Super One British Karting Championship. He races in the highly competitive Cadet Class, for drivers up to 13 years of age, in karts that reach speeds of up to 60 mph.  Leo is the youngest competitor in the series.

Last weekend, Leo raced at the challenging Whilton Mill circuit in Northampton. The qualifying session on Friday was held in wet conditions and despite having to pass a series of slower karts, Leo managed to qualify in the top half of the grid in 15th position. The first two heats on Saturday were also held in wet conditions and Leo performed strongly gaining seven positions in each race and scoring valuable championship points.

For the fourth and final heat on Sunday Leo made rapid progress during the first three laps, moving up to 6th position. An overly ambitious passing attempt, however, resulted in Leo running wide and losing some ground to the front five karts.  However, he then delivered a series of fastest laps to chase down the front runners. He gained one more place and pulled clear of the chasing pack into a safe 5th position.

Leo’s efforts were rewarded with a trophy for 5th place and, most importantly, the trophy for the top Rookie which is for drivers in their first year of Super One competition. Leo now leads that class in the championship standings.

We are looking forward to hearing more news from Leo as the competition continues.
