Macmillan Lunch at Moulsford raises in the region of £17,000

Adventurer Levison Wood entertains the crowd

A hugely successful annual fundraising Macmillan Summer Lunch and shopping event took place this week in the Moulsford sports hall.  With a coffee van sustaining mothers post the early morning drop off, shopping stalls were open for business throughout the morning.  Over thirty stalls set up their wares, selling a wide range of children’s and ladies’ clothing, toys, leather goods, homeware and jewellery.  Each stall and the coffee van donated 10% of their takings on the day to Macmillan Cancer Relief.

By lunchtime, the hall was buzzing with over 300 ladies who donated generously through their ticket price, a raffle and a silent auction.  Once seated at tables, the assembled ladies heard from Dr Helen Griffiths, who explained her role as a Clinical Psychologist and the many ways in which she is able to offer help and support to families affected by cancer, through funding from Macmillan.

Following a delicious lunch and a lot of chatting, the adventurer and explorer Levison Wood took to the stage.  Comparing lunch with 300 ladies to some of his more extreme encounters with Taliban insurgents, Levison charmed his audience with tales of his adventures all over the world.  From his introduction to a life of exploration through the army, to his more recent walk the length of the Nile and his trip across the Himalayas accompanied by TV film crews, Levison entertained and inspired  - his overriding message was to travel and explore the world in which we live.  His upcoming trip to travel the length of Central America on foot from Mexico to Colombia will no doubt provide him with many more tales of the unexpected.

This was the first event run by the new Henley and South Oxfordshire Macmillan Fundraising Committee, which is mainly made up of mothers from Year 6 at Moulsford and is chaired by Nicki Mills.  The Committee is extremely grateful for all the support and encouragement they have received, and of course for the very generous donations resulting in such a fantastic total sum in the region of £17,000 for Macmillan.  For further information on the incredible work done by Macmillan Cancer Relief, please visit www.macmillan.org.uk
