Première of Roses
Kings, villains, epic battles, two warring families. The War of the Roses has plenty to offer to a group of Year 5s putting on a play! Not only that, but when the talented Mr and Mrs Braden (our Director of Music) have written the script and music specifically for the boys, you know you’re onto a winner!
For two nights the boys dazzled their audiences with their memory of complex lines, fabulous singing talents and, most importantly, teamwork in putting the show together.
Each form group was given a section of the story to tell: from Henry VI and his formidable wife Margaret of Anjou (“bless you”) losing the throne, to Richard III’s final reckoning against Henry (Harry) Tudor at the Battle of Bosworth.
With only a short time since the start of term to cover so much content, we were even more fortunate to have so much cross-curricular support from other departments within the school. In Humanities the boys were learning more about the time period through activities including re-enacting battles using skittles as soldiers (which were duly eaten when the troops were lost!), while DT and Art set about tasking the boys with making their own shields and (hobby) horses to use during the play. A fantastic example of the diverse but integrated curriculum the boys experience at Moulsford.
As ever, many thank you’s must be passed on to the teachers and all Year 5 parents for their support, but the final word must go to the boys who truly excelled and have set a high standard for next year’s group!
