A celebration to start the day
World Book Day began with a Whole School Assembly, with the focus being on the importance of reading for pleasure. It was lovely to have Archie DP open the assembly with a rendition of the recent James Bond song, and there were also a couple of superb dramatic performances from Hector B and James D.
The Assembly then celebrated the boys’ literary successes. Prizes were awarded to the new reading stars in each form, as well as the reading millionaires. There was also a celebration of the other events and activities taking place within the English Department, including the boys selected for the next imaginative writing anthology and the winners of the bananagrams competition.
The prizes for the annual class poem competition were also awarded, with 5R victorious for the Juniors and 7D winning the Senior category. A line from 5S’ poem ‘For the Fun of Reading’ was mentioned as it sums up the magic of reading: ‘Books open new doors, which I love to enter to see the possibilities on the other side.’
Assembly was also an opportunity for boys to see their Extreme Reading photos and videos from the half term competition organised by Mrs Wood. Congratulations to runners up William S and Dexter N, with Xander D’s location stealing the show as he was photographed reading on the front step of Number 10 Downing Street!
It was a wonderfully uplifting way to start the day, especially as the boys had the opportunity to see each other dressed up in the various weird and wonderful costumes!
After assembly, Years 3 to 8 enjoyed some incredible workshops led by the Moulsford staff, all linked to the theme of favourite books and promoting a love of reading. Amongst other things, the workshops included making baked treats, creating short films promoting favourite books, creating characters based on the boys’ cuddly toys, literary based art, characterisation drama, and even Roald Dahl inspired PE games! In Year 4 the boys even enjoyed 'A Date with a Book' where the classroom became a candlelit restaurant and the boys sat across the table from a friend who then had the job of ‘pitching’ their favourite book. Every couple of minutes they ‘moved on’ so that they listened to a different pitch. We were really impressed with the knowledge, enthusiasm and passion with which the boys spoke and we hope the boys left with a desire to read something new.
The catering staff also got into the spirit of things with a World Book Day themed lunch and some fabulous costumes for them too!
Thank you to everyone involved in making World Book Week another huge success.
