Pre-Prep learn all about birds
Pre-Prep have had another wonderful virtual experience this week; we joined Jason from Falconry UK. Jason ran five sessions, one for each class, and the boys were introduced to five different and very impressive birds. The largest bird we saw was an eagle owl and the smallest was a pygmy falcon. We also saw a kookaburra called Blue, he had beautiful blue feathers and is the largest member of the kingfisher family. Jason taught us that owls' eyes take up 70% of the head which doesn't leave much room for a brain so, while they are excellent hunters, they aren't the cleverest of animals. Birds of prey also almost always catch their prey with their talons and land to eat it. The one exception to that is the kite. A kite can catch its prey, find a thermal to glide on and eat its prey while still in the air.
All of the boys were very enthusiastic about their opportunity to see these very special birds and it feels like a wonderful way to round off a half term of home learning.
