Head's Blog: A Busy Week for 4GS

Head's Blog

This has been a busy week for 4GS, Mr. Sage’s class. On Tuesday, they had a visit from BBC South Today who interviewed Mr. Sage, some of the boys, and Jovi (Mr. Sage’s hearing dog), as well as a representative from the charity Hearing Dogs for Deaf People for a piece to highlight Deaf Awareness Week.

The resulting feature, due to air tonight on BBC South Today (6.30 – 7.00pm), or failing that over the weekend, is to explain the very important role of hearing dogs and how far they can help improve the lives of those with hearing impairment or deafness.  BBC Radio Oxford is also planning to run a similar feature once the TV piece has aired, and Hearing Dogs for Deaf People are publicising Graham and Jovi’s story on their social media channels from this afternoon if you would like to follow them.

As a reminder, Hearing Dogs for Deaf People was one of Moulsford’s school charities last year, and our community raised a staggering £20,000 for this excellent cause.

On Thursday morning, 4GS gave an excellent assembly with three themes, all of which were loud and clear.  I thought one message was particularly pertinent: life is busy and we are presented with many wonderful opportunities. Juggling them all can be difficult and in such a hectic world, it can be easy to forget to prioritise those things which matter most, such as family and friends.

Apart from delivering an excellent message, I was so impressed by the confident and articulate manner in which the boys spoke. Not only did they recite their lines fluently, but they all had a presence on stage and appeared to enjoy being in the limelight. While watching the assembly I had to remind myself that these boys are only eight or nine years old. Opportunities to talk, present, act, and play an instrument in front of an audience are invaluable and the more exposure children have to this at a younger age, the more accomplished they will become.
