A whoopsy whiffling (= ‘great’) Roald Dahl Day
On Thursday we enjoyed the ever-popular World Book Day, when the boys and many staff came to school in the snow in some splendiferous Roald Dahl inspired costumes including Umpah Lumpahs, Willy Wonkas, BFGs, Mr Fox’s, Mathildas, a couple of scary looking Mrs Trunchbulls and child catchers, as well as a giant peach and even a real-life Esio Trot!
The day began with a Whole School Assembly, which celebrated the boys’ literary successes. Mr Martin gave out awards for handwriting and spelling (best and most improved), 500 word stories, and the annual class poem competition: Pumas won the Pre-Prep prize (they rhymed Italy with prickly!), 4CS won the Junior prize for their thought provoking poem and 7GW won the Senior prize for their entertaining and intelligent nonsense poem.
Assembly was also an opportunity for boys to see their Extreme Reading photos from the half term competition organised by Mr Sage. Congratulations to Charlie H whose photo was chosen as the overall winner. Two boys from Year 6 and Year 7 were to have taken part in the Demosthenes Competition at Bradfield College, but this was cancelled due to the snow so they performed their speeches to the school instead – well done Barnaby H and Theo M, and Rufus S and Jackson A.
After assembly, Years 3 to 8 enjoyed some incredible workshops led by the Moulsford staff and linked to the Roald Dahl books allocated to each year group (The BFG, The Twits, George’s Marvellous Medicine, The Giraffe and The Pelly and Me, The Witches, Mathilda, Going Solo and The Hitchhiker). The workshops included making frobscottle drinks, creating consequence picture poems, and performing Dahl inspired nonsense rhymes and songs.
Our catering team then provided a delumptious lunch of wormy spaghetti and boggis chicken followed by Wonka’s crunch surprise.
